Visit the
home of
Mary Surratt, who was hanged for her
involvement in the
assassination of President Lincoln, and then
visit
Point Lookout at the confluence of the
Potomac River and the
Chesapeake Bay, the site of one of the
largest and worst Union prison camps during the
Civil War. The tour will begin with a visit to a
Civil War site in the Franconia
area.
Start the day at
8 a.m., August 7, 2010
with coffee, donuts and a tour of the Franconia
Museum, located in the
Franconia Governmental Center, 6121 Franconia
Road. Board a comfortable rest-room equipped
motor
coach for the trip to a local historic site
and then the Surratt House in
Prince Georges County. After a buffet lunch
at the
Golden Corral in
Waldorf, Maryland, you’ll venture on to Point
Lookout, which is now a
Maryland state park as well as the site of
the prison camp.
While at Point
Lookout, you’ll learn of the miserable conditions as
well as the
Fairfax County connection to one of the few
successful escapes from the camp during the Civil
War. You also will learn about one prisoner who was
captured just nine days before the war ended; how he
got to Point Lookout and how he was released
COST: $100.00 Each. Includes Buffet lunch at
Golden Corral and a fast-food value card per person
on the way home as well as the entrance fee to each
historic site and a contribution to the Franconia
Museum.
Bottled water will be provided on the bus. No

Point Lookout was established in August of 1863.
More than 50,000 prisoners would be held there and
almost 4,000 would die during the next two years.
The prisoners were housed in tents.
Leave from Franconia Museum at Franconia
Governmental Center, 6121 Franconia Road.

parking. Arrive at 8:00 a.m. for tour of
museum, coffee and donuts. Bus leaves approximately
8:15 a.m. Estimated arrival time back at Franconia
is between 6:30 and
7:00 p.m.

We will be leaving the Truro Rectory at 8:30 and
will be visiting Mosby’s Grave, the Lottery Site,
the Caleb Rector House, Mt. Carmel, Berryville and
more (arriving back around 5-5:30).

The Mosby tour will start at the Truro
Rectory, in
Fairfax City, where Mosby captured Brigadier General
Edwin Stoughton. We ask everyone to arrive at the
Truro Rectory at
8 a.m., to sign
in. The bus will leave at
8:30. We will be
visiting Mosby’s grave,
the Lottery Site, the Caleb Rector house, Mt. Carmel
Church, the Old Chapel, Beamer’s Woods (the Hanging
Site), Berryville and more. We hope to
arrive back at the Truro Rectory at 5:30. If you
are a member of the Stuart-Mosby Historical Society
the cost is $65. If you are not a member of the SMHS
the cost for the tour is $75. The tour does not
cover your food, however, we will be stopping at a
fast food place
somewhere on the tour.
